We've all got a dodgy school picture hanging around our parents' house that we'd like to keep hidden from view.
And the world's most beautiful women are no different.
In their adult lives they rely on an arsenal of stylists, skin care experts and hairdressers to make sure they look polished so it's refreshing to see that as children and teenagers, these stars were just like the rest of us.
With bowl-cuts, buck teeth and bargain-basement eye glasses they are a far cry from the glamorous ladies we're used to seeing on the red carpet.
If they could have looked into their fashion future, they may have been more resistant when their mothers insisted on cutting their fringes or picking out their clothes.
Without resorting to plastic surgery or drastic diets, these women demonstrate how easy it is to grow from ugly duckling to sophisticated swan.
Hair is frequently lightened with honey and caramel highlights and mousey brown is changed to bright blonde for a sexier look.
Middle partings are switched to the side, and visa versa depending on face shape.
Stars with angular faces such as Keira Knightley and Jennifer Garner use a side parting to soften their features.
Whereas models who want to look younger, such as Elle Macpherson and Rosie Huntington Whiteley, prefer a centre parting and tumbling waves.
And, as these pictures show, hair straighteners are a girl's best friend.
When it comes to clothes, remember that teenage penchant for tie-dye? Be thankful there's no record of yours, unlike poor Chelsea Clinton who wore the unflattering pattern in the early Nineties.
And Coleen Rooney wouldn't be seen dead wearing that grotty black anorak and severe middle parting in her hair now she's the wife of one of the richest footballers in the world.
Her team of super stylists have taught her that a soft quiff, a light spray tan and lots of black eyeliners to bring out her pretty brown eyes are much more flattering.
Without the thousands of tax-deductible dollars to spend on personal styling, it's unlikely that we can achieve such a startling transformation.
But with beauty tips like these, we might just be able to get close.
